  • Hi, im quite new to djing and dont know a whole lot yet but im having trouble running traktor pro 2 on windows vista home premium. The processor is an intel pentium dual and is at 1.86 GHz. I am also using the Kontrol S4 but im having trouble problems with the audio and when i run the latency test it is usually fine until it hits a crack which sends is past 40,000 sometimes. I am hopefully getting windows 7 soon and im wondering if this will help or is it just not possible to run pro 2 on a 1.86 GHz processor 2gb RAM on 32bit. I really dont have the money for a good mac but i really like djing and would like to begin doing small time gigs. Any help would be great thanks!

You will need to buy a new computer or get hold of an older Traktor 1.

I suggest that you look for a used Macbook/Macbook Pro with Intel Core Duo and at least 2Gb ram.
It should not be so expensive……

I dont have any experience with the S4 being used as the soundcard, but generally speaking I have helped guys cofigure their Pentium laptop for using Traktor Pro 2 without problems. It generally involves shutting down unwanted programs when DJing such as antivirus. It also helps if you shut off your Wi-Fi. The link DJ Hessler provided clearly states that you should be able to run Traktor Pro 2 on a Pentium machine, let alone a Pentium Dual. Your machine’s specs are way above the minimum.

Also, very important, make sure the USB ports are always active (control panel -> power management -> advanced options). Generally speaking, make sure performance isnt sacrficed for power saving in those settings – if not sure about a setting Google it or ask here ;).

What latency settings do you have in your ASIO panel? have you tried with higher? What sampling rate? If not 44.1 lower to this.

PS: by the way, your topic title is misleading – there is a huuuuuge difference between a 1.86 one core processor and a 1.86 dual core processor.

There are actually quite a few tools out there that will help you get the best out the system you have. A member of this forum (DJ Subculture) sent me the following link which is for optimizing windows 7 but many tips are likely applicable for your Vista setup.

Also, member Smitten put together a tutorial and set of script on DJ Tech tools that may also help you out.

I’ve had latency issues with TP2 on a quad-core desktop with 4x 2.8ghz processors and 4Gig RAM. Your issues may not be related to your processing power but instead something else. Also, as DJ Hessler suggest, TP 1.2.7 is much less taxing on your system.

Some good advice over at NI……..Here is some settings off that link you definitely want to check as I have personally solved audio drop outs in friends’ laptops by those alone (especially with those USB settings I also refered to earlier):

Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
Then click “Change advanced power settings.” In the window that opens make sure you have the following settings:

    • Hard disc > Turn off hard disk after > Setting (Minutes) = Never
    • Sleep > Sleep after > Setting (Minutes) = Never
    • USB settings > USB selective suspend setting > Setting = Disabled

Also, I would disregard the advice to disable “Aero” as it has been discovered that in some systems it has a negative impact on performance because the graphics taxing switches from Graphics card to processor when disabling it. Another thing I always wondered is how automatic disk defragmentation is performed by windows Vista/7. In 7, it comes “on” by default, a setting I quickly changed to manual – I really dont want my OS to defragment my hard disks when it THINKS my system is idle.

Looking over Traktor Kontrol S4 System Requirements .
It looks like you’re just there. But ideally, you want to be be a bit above minimum specs.

Anyway, you’re using Windows Vista which is less than ideal for audio work. Windows7 is better, but your laptop might not have enough processing power.

In the mean time, here’s a link with information that you should follow.

Please follow ALL of the instructions. Let us know if you need any more help.

Wow! Kill, kill, kill! And I mean programs and processes! MC Affee antivirous, Avira Antivirus, Windows Defender (WTH you ‘ve got three antivirus programs running), Windows Live Messenger, Cyberlink Powercinema, Google toolbar and Google desktop, “Creative” auto-detection stuff, Kodak auto-detection stuff, Epson status monitor, iTunes helper, Camera Monitor application, Manycam application, Digital Line Detection (what is this thing?), Akamai (???), Flux (???) Real Player …..

You ‘ve got way too many unwanted-unneeded (when DJing) processes running. And I can see we dont see the beginning of the list.

edit: for the third time (sorry if Im being repetitive) did you set the USB and hard disk settings as suggested above?

edit 2: the minimum is a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz, you have got a Pentium Dual – you are NOT just there as far as specs go, you are well over above.

Kilian Wegner, post: 9658 wrote: I have got the updates for BIOS,audio and chipset aswell as followed the instructions from NI but it still does seem to help. I also set the power preference to background services but nothing much its still got drop outs and sometimes total music cuts for up to 3 seconds. btw the picture is of latency monitor while traktor is running.

I take it that you use your laptop for internet purposes too?
If yes, THAT’S your problem. You DJ PC laptop should be just that, you DJ laptop. No surfing the net, no webcam, no email.
I would uninstall everything you don’t need for DJ use. In fact, before I switched to Win7, I did a clean install of Vista (yeah, my laptop started out as a Vista machine) just to clean out all of the bundled junk that came with my laptop.

How much ram did you say you had??
Min 2Gb but with all that tasks running you would need more
You might have a ram issue because when ram is full the computer uses HDD space for ram tasks.

Also sorry that I missunderstood you I thought by your text that you had a Pentium 1,86Ghz….
